Zsolt Faludi Ceramics

“I work with clay – anything can happen”

Zsolt Faludi, ceramicist, academic, educator, cook and philosopher, started working with clay as a curious youth in his native Hungary and has never stopped. After forty years professional experience on both sides of the globe he's recognised as one of Australia's most creative and distinctive craftsmen.

“I often wonder about my attention span being shorter than average. It’s a dilemma that crops up in connection with my practice, which seems to have an ever-shifting focus – it is difficult for me to speak of having an established ‘style’. This absence doesn’t worry me; the evanescent nature of my practice is really only a problem when I have to frame it for an ‘artist statement.’ For me, it’s the work that presents the statement. If it isn’t capable of self-articulation, any attempt to prop it up with verbal scaffolding only makes matters worse. Still, for the sake of making an attempt, my statement goes like this: I work with clay – anything can happen.”

About Zsolt

Faludi moved to Tasmania in 1984 and has worked from his present studios in the Huon Valley, 40kms. south of Hobart, for over 20 years. From there he has supplied a wide and diverse range of shapes and styles to major galleries and dedicated clients throughout the country, including famed Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart.

He has a masters degree in Fine Arts from UTAS, where he has also taught over a number of years.

He holds various workshops for a fast-growing public interest in pottery, including for children, established artists and disadvantaged people from many walks of life. Faludi Ceramics' educational programme is largely held in his studios, but also at other locations as required.

His potting and glazing studios which, when completed, will become a multi-purpose centre for ceramics, sit on three acres of heavily-planted land where Zsolt also lives and which, conveniently, also happens to have a clay soil worth fashioning into special pieces.

Faludi's craft is boldly functional, yet incorporates intricate glazes, textures and contrasts reminiscent of his European roots. His fermenting jars, tea pots, water dispensers, mugs and vases have become distinctive signatures of his work, although it remains purposely undefinable.
